VETASSESS Updates: Resumes Accepting Applications for Electrician and Metal Machinist Occupations

Introduction

Starting July 15, VETASSESS will resume accepting new applications for two critical trade occupations: Electrician (General) and Metal Machinist (First Class). This decision comes after a pause in September 2023 to prioritise processing existing cases. The reopening follows discussions with Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). It applies to both Pathway 1 and Pathway 2 applications under the Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) and the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) programs.

Electrician (General) – ANZSCO Code 341111

Background:

The Electrician (General) occupation, coded under ANZSCO 341111, is a licensed trade in Australia. The licensing requirement means applicants must undergo both a practical assessment and a technical interview to qualify.

Assessment Process:

  • Practical Assessment: This hands-on evaluation tests the applicant’s ability to perform tasks safely and competently.
  • Technical Interview: This component assesses the theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills necessary for the trade.

Application Pathways:

  • Pathway 1: For applicants who have formal training and experience.
  • Pathway 2: For applicants with significant work experience without formal qualifications.

Metal Machinist (First Class) – ANZSCO Code 323214

Background:

The Metal Machinist (First Class), under ANZSCO code 323214, is another essential trade occupation. Like electricians, machinists must demonstrate practical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet Australian standards.

Assessment Process:

  • Practical Assessment: Evaluates the applicant’s machining skills, including using tools and machinery.
  • Technical Interview: Test the applicant’s understanding of machining principles and safety procedures.

Application Pathways:

  • Pathway 1: For formally trained and experienced machinists.
  • Pathway 2: For experienced machinists without formal qualifications.

Conclusion

The resumption of applications for Electrician (General) and Metal Machinist (First Class) marks a significant step in addressing the demand for skilled trades in Australia. By ensuring thorough assessments, VETASSESS upholds high standards for trade qualifications, benefiting both applicants and the broader Australian community.
